Marko Turunen
(NOTE: Marko is not taking commissions in 2023)
Marko Turunen (b. 1973) is a Kotka-based artist and illustrator. He graduated from Turku Arts Academy in 1997. Comics form the most visible part of Marko’s illustrational production and therefore they have already been translated into French, German and Italian. Marko is a open-minded and candid illustrator, whose images are often dramatic and strong in ambience. He has been awarded with the first prize in the Kemi Nordic Comics Festival short story series in 2000 and the grand prize in the Fumetto Festival International Cartoon Competition in Switzerland in 2003. The Finnish Comics Society awarded Marko with the Puupäähattu comic award in 2007. Marko’s occasionally even boisterous illustration style won’t leave anyone indifferent – which was picked up by the New York Times to which Marko has done illustrations for. Background in comics can be seen in Marko’s illustrations as they always seem to contain more layers and levels than you notice at first glance.
